- Transmissions
-
- The car engine does
- not magically move
- the car by virtue
- of being on. The
- rotation of the
- crankshaft must be
- transferred to the
- wheels. The
- transmission
- transfers the power
- through a complex
- set of gears known
- collectively as the
- transmission.
-
- Two types of
- transmissions
- exist, manual or
- automatic. Manual
- transmissions
- require the
- operator of the
- vehicle to decide
- what gear to use
- and when to use it.
- The driver makes
- the gear selection
- depending on the
- speed and load of
- the car. By
- depressing the
- clutch, the gears
- of the transmission
- are separated from
- their connection
- with the crankshaft
- of the engine,
- allowing the
- operator to switch
- to the gear with
- the desired amount
- of power or
- direction.
- Automatic
- transmissions are
- not directly
- connected to the
- engine as the
- manual
- transmissions are.
- Instead, a torque
- converter, filled
- with automatic
- transmission fluid,
- connects the
- crankshaft to the
- automatic
- transmission. The
- torque converter
- turbine, by the
- force of the
- automatic
- transmission fluid,
- drives the
- automatic
- transmission in its
- gearing. Most cars
- with automatic
- transmissions allow
- the driver to
- select the
- different gears
- without the need of
- a clutch, but by
- simply moving the
- gear shift lever.
